Hazelnuts , walnuts , macadamia nuts - you probably already know all these types of nuts. But have you ever heard of tiger nuts? No? Then watch out, because the pea-sized, brown nodules have a lot to offer! In Africa, where tiger nuts originally come from, they have been used as a popular food and medicine for centuries. In Egypt and the Middle East, too, they have long been said to have a healing effect. In the meantime, however, the “nuts” have also arrived in Europe and are known here under different names. Maybe the name tiger nut tells you something. The little nodule is called this because of its special appearance: the tiger nut is striped like a tiger!
A nut for nut allergy sufferers?!
You're probably wondering why we put "nuts" in quotation marks? Similar to almonds , cashews and Brazil nuts, tiger nuts are not really nuts at all, as they do not fall from the tree in their shells. In fact, the tiger nut plant is a sour grass plant that looks like ordinary grass and has pea-sized, brown nodules on its roots - the tiger nuts. This gives them a decisive advantage, especially for those of us who suffer from allergies: Even with a nut allergy, you can eat our tiger nuts without hesitation and use them for cooking and baking. The tubers also partly owe their name to the way they grow. “Erd-” because they grow underground and “-almond” because they taste slightly like almonds.
Use sliced tigernuts
The tigernut is hardly edible raw because it is very hard and difficult to chew. That is why it is usually processed further. In Spain it is traditionally the main ingredient of the national drink Horchata de Chufa - a refreshing, plant-based tiger nut milk. With us you will find the tigernuts in dried and planed form. Due to their light, natural sweetness, they are ideal as an ingredient in a tigernut granola with cinnamon , as a nut alternative in homemade muesli or for baking an almond and cherry crumble tart . But you can use them not only as a nut and grain substitute in baked goods and desserts. Also as an alternative to peanuts in the coriander pesto , as a topping on aTigernuts taste delicious in a vegetable bowl or crunchy breading for vegan chicken nuggets .

Mold despite dry storage?
I always store my nuts, seeds, etc. airtight in large screw-top jars. After a few weeks, the tiger nuts smelled rancid, and something had settled on the inside of the glass, whether it was mold, I do not know exactly, in any case, I had to dispose of the tiger nuts - too bad. Since the cashew crushed could not convince taste, this was my first and at the same time last order at Koro.
Spoiled after a month!
After my morning cereal, I felt worse and worse as time went on. Tired, weary. Then severe abdominal pain started and I had to throw up partially. I did not know why! Then by chance I smelled the tiger nuts (planed) and they were so rancid. Unfortunately I didn't notice because I always put 10 things in my cereal and then off with it in the microwave. But makes sense of course...if it is planed, then more oxygen gets to the surface, which leads to faster spoilage, is yes with ground flaxseed also so...I should have thought perhaps earlier. I would have been very happy about a hint on the website anyway! The whole thick bag is unfortunately migrated to the trash...next time rather buy whole
Tiger nuts are super healthy and as the main ingredient
Tiger nuts are super healthy and as a main ingredient in muesli they help, thanks to little kcal, to lose weight. For nut allergy sufferers top, because it is roots, which taste nutty. Gives sweetness to the muesli.
